Of horses, fungi and asthma
By Dr Christiane Schnabel
Dr Christiane Schnabel was invited to Oberschleissheim for the conference of the Bacteriology and Mycology Section of the German Veterinary Medical Society (DVG). The immunologist from the University of Leipzig gave a lecture on 27 May 2025 on “Aspergillus fumigatus antigens as important immunogens in Equine Asthma”.

While only a few researchers study fungal pathogens, they appear to be very relevant for respiratory diseases such as asthma in humans and animals. Christiane Schnabel enriched the mycology session of the conference as an immunologist. Her presentation stimulated an intensive interdisciplinary discussion and further exchange in bacteriology, mycology and immunology will follow.
Comparative aspects of fungi as colonising commensals, invasive pathogens or accidental immunogens were already the subject of lively discussion at the social evening in the historic setting of Schleißheim Castle.
