Three doctoral students take over our Instagram channel

Starting in October, three doctoral students from Essen—Paula, Eva, and Isabel—will take over the Infect-Net Instagram channel and show just how much girl power there is in infection research.

From the pioneers of infection research to today's experts, they aim to present exciting insights into our community, including in the following series:

  • Pathgen of the month
    Starting with poliovirus
  • Faces behind the science
In the first articles, the three young infection researchers introduce themselves.
  • Methods & lab hacks
  • Awareness days
The new Instagram team has big plans: Paula Busskamp Castro, Eva Müller and Isabel Zydek want to present topics and role models from infectious disease research.

We briefly introduce the three young researchers from Essen University Hospital .

Paula Busskamp Castro is a doctoral student at the Institute for Research on HIV and AIDS-Associated Diseases. In Christina B. Karsten's research group, she is investigating the sugar coating of the HI virus and how antibodies recognise it.
She herself has benefited from strong women in her own family and would like to raise awareness of female role models in science.

Eva Müller is also doing her PhD at the same institute and is investigating HIV latency in her doctoral thesis, i.e. how the pathogen integrates itself into the genome of certain cells and thus hides from the immune system.
Her mother and her best friend showed her early on that women are allowed to be loud, express clear opinions and shape their lives beyond traditional role models.

Isabel Zydek is a doctoral candidate at the Department of Infectious Diseases and is conducting research into immunotherapies for infections caused by the herpes simplex virus. To this end, she aims to identify suitable monoclonal antibodies.
She is interested in the stories of other women and wants to improve networking among female scientists.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Lucy Wahler, who has been managing and developing our Instagram channel over the past few months, and we are delighted that Paula, Eva and Isabel are joining the social media team.

We look forward to your creative posts!
